The American Occupation of Japan


Japan accepted the Potsdam Declaration on August 14, 1945 and signed the Japanese Instrument Surrender on September 2, 1945. Japan had been under the occupation by the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers (SCAP) since September 2nd, 1945 untill April 28, 1952. In Japan, little attention has been given to the 7 yeras occupation era in the postwar history. The popular historical review of the American occupation of Japan is that USA introduced the democracy to Japan. On the other hand, discovering the true history of this era is one of the major reasons of changing Japanese opinion.
