Annexation of Korea The Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty was signed on August 22, 1910 between the Empire of Japan and the Korean Empire. Based on the treaty, the Empire of Japan began to govern Korea. The annexation itself and the subsequent governance of Korea by Japan are often condemned as imperialism by left wing people. They say that Japan plundered property and culture from Korea with violence and committed a lot of crimes in Korea. However, leaning the real history of the era of the Japanese governance changes such understandings.
